Emotional trading and guardrails
Live session companion: practical frameworks to cut impulse, execute the plan, and protect capital.
Why this matters
- Psychology is the cost center: arrogance, pride, and fear show up in P/L fast.
- Everyone has weak spots - rules exist to protect you from yourself.
- Goal: reduce decisions to checklists so you can execute like a machine.
Strategy 1 - THE SCRIPT
Write your trading process once and follow it every time. No improvising. Build muscle memory.
- I have one core setup that is proven in my journal.
- My script fits on one page and is visible while I trade.
- I follow it step-by-step - no skipping.
Your SCRIPT - fill this in
| Step | Your rule (write it in) |
|---|---|
| 1) Pre-trade state | [ ] I am calm (0-2/5 emotion). [ ] No FOMO. [ ] I can walk away. |
| 2) Market context | Trend, key levels, news, econ calendar checked. |
| 3) Setup criteria | My A-setup checklist passes (list 3-5 bullets). |
| 4) Entry trigger | Exact signal (price/level/flow/timeframe). |
| 5) Position size | Core: $_____ Risk-shot: $_____ (or ____% of port). |
| 6) Stop and invalidation | Hard stop: _____% or level _____. Invalidation: _____. |
| 7) Targets and R | TP1 at ____ (≈2R). TP2 at ____ (≈3R). Scale rules: ____. |
| 8) Trade management | Move stop? Trail? Only on rule-based signals, never emotions. |
| 9) Exit protocol | Close at invalidation/target/time-stop. No hope trades. |
| 10) Log | Record reason, size, stop, target, emotion score, lesson. |
Strategy 2 - Creating GUARDRAILS
Identify patterns that cause damage, then build if-then rules that block them - every time.
Trigger → behavior → cost (find your patterns)
| Trigger (what starts it?) | Behavior (what you do) | Cost ($/%) | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Missed move / FOMO | Chase late entry, oversize | -3% avg | Often |
| Red P/L | Revenge trade after loss | -2-5% day | Sometimes |
| Boredom | Take mid setups | Small leaks | Daily |
Emotion scale (use before each trade)
| Score | You feel… | Do / don't |
|---|---|---|
| 0-1 | Calm, neutral | Proceed if setup qualifies / Do not force trades |
| 2 | Alert, focused | Proceed; follow script / Do not improvise |
| 3 | Irritated or amped | Micro-pause 60s; re-check script / Do not increase size |
| 4 | Tilted, anxious | Step away 15-30 min / Do not trade |
| 5 | Rage / fear | Stop for day; review guardrails / Do not open platform |
Pre-trade centering (60-second protocol)
- 3 slow breaths (inhale 4s, hold 2s, exhale 6-8s).
- Emotion score: ____/5 (must be ≤2 to place a trade).
- Calendar/news checked; no landmines near entry.
- My setup matches my SCRIPT; size and stop are predefined.
In-trade rules (keep it mechanical)
- No moving stop further away - ever.
- Only scale if a predefined add-trigger hits.
- If invalidation triggers, exit without debate.
- If emotion rises above 3/5, flatten or tighten and step away.
Emergency plan (if I break a rule)
- Flatten positions immediately; screenshot P/L for accountability.
- Close platform; set 15-minute timer; walk away from desk.
- Write 3 lines: trigger, behavior, fix. Re-open only when the timer ends.
